System Components

MWCC’s Dedicated Equipment Sets the Standard for the Industry

The MWCC Containment System includes a variety of equipment specifically built to ensure comprehensive coverage of member wells, allowing the company to effectively respond to an array of well incidents across a wide range of well bore pressures, fluid temperatures, water depths and other technical variables.

Throughout the system design process, MWCC worked with regulators from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure all operational requirements and expectations were met. The capabilities of the chief components of the Containment System were demonstrated upon delivery; the entire system is maintained and routinely tested in a warm-stack, or operationally functional state.

Key components include:

  1. Dispersant injection system, used to break up oil flowing out of the well;
  2. Capping stacks, used to shut-off the flow from an incident well;
  3. Interim collection systems, used to capture oil and gas on a temporary basis; and
  4. Extended flowback systems, used to capture oil and gas on a longer-term basis.

The Containment System can operate in water depths up to 10,000 feet, handle temperatures up to 400 degrees and effectively seal off a well with up to 20,000 pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure.

Response Team

MWCC’s Highly Skilled Staff and Reservist Response Team Brings Decades of Industry Experience and Know-How to Manage an Incident Involving a Compromised Well

MWCC is comprised of highly skilled employees, engineers and contractors that are well-versed in the technical world of offshore operations and incident response. Staff are trained on the principles of the Incident Command System (ICS), which is the standard approach used for emergency management across government and industries. In the event of an incident, MWCC’s staff brings subject matter expertise to bear in planning and operations activities for safe containment of the well and to the broader Incident Response Team.

MWCC’s Reservist Response Team is trained to be ready if called upon by MWCC, ensuring they are prepared to operate the processing equipment on the MCVs and assist in on-going well containment operations when activated. The Reservist Response Team is a crucial component of MWCC’s Containment System and ensures that the company has the capacity to respond to any incident with highly skilled and industry-experienced personnel. MWCC hand selects each Reservist Responder from a list of independently identified top industry talent working in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Training Program

To Ensure Incident Response Readiness, MWCC Follows an Industry Leading Training Program

MWCC is committed to continuously sharpening its skills and streamlining response protocols through regular training and drills. These are held both independently and in conjunction with member companies as well as partners like Technip FMC PLC, Kiewit Offshore Services, John Wood Group PLC (Wood) and others.

Training includes activation and incident response drills, custom-built virtual reality training simulators and regular maintenance and function testing of all equipment in the Containment System.
