Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) was founded as an independent, not-for-profit organization in 2010 as a result of industry collaboration initiated by Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Shell to address the need for a quick, effective solution to contain compromised deepwater wells in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
MWCC is built on a commitment to the values of safety, integrity and excellence. Members each possess an equal share of the company and voting rights. The leadership team, comprised of senior leaders from MWCC member companies and seasoned experts from across the energy industry, is dedicated to instilling the corporate values of safety, integrity and excellence in every facet of its operation and ensuring faithful execution of the company’s mission: To be continuously ready to respond to a well control incident.
Today, MWCC has 10 member companies: Anadarko, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Hess, Shell, TotalEnergies and Woodside Energy.
While most of the wells drilled in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico are operated by MWCC member companies, the organization’s Containment System and services are also available to any operator in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. A non-member company can enter into an agreement designating MWCC as their well containment response provider when filing their drilling permit application with the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE).
In the event of a compromised well incident, MWCC activates its Response Team and works with the Well Operator to deploy the Containment System, which is assembled and launched from its two shore bases located near Mobile, Alabama and Corpus Christi, Texas. MWCC personnel integrate into the Operator’s broader response plan to manage the mobilization and operation of its Containment System – on behalf of the Operator – until the compromised well is controlled and capped.
