The Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) is proud to have supported its member company Chevron in executing a recent exercise to demonstrate the offshore deployment of well containment that was initiated by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE).

During the unannounced exercise, which began May 19 and ended May 23, MWCC under Chevron’s direction deployed one of its capping stacks located at our Ingleside, Texas, shore base facility to a designated location more than 500 miles away offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Once on site, the capping stack was lowered onto a simulated well head situated more than 6,200 feet below the ocean surface on the sea floor. Connected to the well head, the capping stack was pressurized to approximately 13,000 pounds per square inch, mirroring the intensity the kinds of pressures commonly encountered in Gulf of Mexico wells.

BSEE initiated the exercise to verify the oil and gas industry’s continued readiness to respond to an unexpected subsea blowout. Chevron and MWCC showcased their capabilities to mobilize, deploy, and install source control equipment in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

MWCC takes pride in participating in these types of exercises. Such exercises demonstrate the oil and gas industry’s continuing commitment to protecting the safety of our oceans and coastal communities.
